Protein in Urine While Pregnant

During pregnancy your doctor asks to take a number of tests of which urine test is one. Urine test for pregnant ladies is important to check the presence of protein in urine as this can be a worrisome condition while you are expecting. However, low level of protein in the urine is common in the pregnancy days. It is because of the fact that kidneys have to work harder during those days. There are a number of causes for this condition to arise during during pregnancy, some of which are explained here.

Preeclampsia: Preeclampsia is the most common reason of having protein in urine. Often pregnancy complications like low birth weight are related to preeclampsia. The condition of preeclampsia can be corrected only by early detection of the symptoms and having a healthy diet with less salt, mild exercising and drinking lot of water throughout the day. The symptoms of preeclampsia include high blood pressure, headache, vomiting, swelling in few body parts, problem in vision, pain below ribs and a general feeling of being unwell.

UTI and kidney infection: Another reason for presence of protein urine while pregnant is the urinary tract and kidney infections. The most recognizable symptom of urinary tract infection is problem in urinating and repeated urge to urinate. Urinary tract infection, if left untreated may lead to kidney infection which is characterized by symptoms like nausea, fever, vomiting, chills and back pain. Urinary tract infection is not a problem for pregnant women but kidney infection pose to be a serious issue. Kidney infection leads to problems in pregnancy like premature labor and low birth weight.

Other causes: Apart from aforementioned causes of protein in urine, there are many more possible causes. According to Mayo Clinic, these causes include emotional stress, prolong exposure to cold or heat, heavy exercises and fever.  Other causes are kidney disease, lupus, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, leukemia, kidney failure and arthritis. In some women, dehydration and certain medications may also be a cause of protein in urine while pregnant.

Urine test follows a simple procedure. You give a sample and the technician uses a dipstick to drop few drops of sample urine onto the testing strips. If the color of strip changes, that means protein is present in urine. In the case of positive result, you will be asked to check with your doctor for the possible cause of protein in urine and ways to correct it.

If  your urine test results show the presence of protein in urine then it is advised to see your doctor before arriving at any conclusion. This is meant especially for women who are 27 weeks pregnant or mother who are still in first few weeks after giving birth. The doctor will give the correct diagnosis of cause of protein present in urine which may be as minor as urinary tract infection to as serious as kidney failure. However early diagnosis of presence of protein in urine for expecting mothers can be easily managed.
